CBS News has the scoop on the impeachment trial of President Joe Biden and the way it’s unfolding.
Biden’s legal team is pushing the case in federal court.
In the first case to be heard in the federal courts in the Trump era, the Republican nominee has pleaded the Fifth Amendment in the face of accusations he lied to the FBI about contacts with Russia during the 2016 election.
Biden’s legal defense is asking the court to throw out the charges against him because of his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination.
The Fifth Amendment bars a president from “confidential communications” with the president or from “secret communication with the head of state of another state.”
BIDEN’S LEGAL TEAM SAYS HE’S PRIVILEGED FROM TELEVISION BEGINS BIDENS PRIORITY The Obama Justice Department charged Biden with perjury for allegedly lying to investigators about contacts between Russian officials and his 2016 presidential campaign.
The allegations included claims Biden was paid to lie.
According to court documents, Biden and his campaign staff “intentionally omitted” conversations with the Russian government officials during their travels and meetings.
The campaign is also alleged to have “intentional mischaracterized” conversations it had with the Russians about their efforts to influence the election.
